Wales Connectivity Equivalents

This page tracks GP Connect-like and Spine-like services in Wales.

Current Reading

Wales is best read through Digital Health and Care Wales national services rather than NHS England GP Connect. The closest functional routes are Welsh GP Record, Welsh Clinical Portal, Welsh Clinical Communications Gateway, NHS Wales App, the National Data Resource / Care Data Repository direction, NHS Wales FHIR standards alignment, and the Welsh Demographic Service relationship with PDS.

GP Connect-Like Routes

Wales route Closest England comparison What it supports Boundary
Welsh GP Record GP Connect Access Record / Summary Care Record comparison Access to GP-record-derived information through national Welsh clinical tools. Welsh national service evidence, not NHS England GP Connect evidence.
Welsh Clinical Portal Clinical viewer / shared clinical access comparison National clinical portal access to Welsh health information and workflows. Portal route, not a product-specific GP Connect API.
Welsh Clinical Communications Gateway Send Document / referral and messaging comparison GP-to-hospital and hospital-to-GP clinical communications. Welsh national service; not GP Connect Send Document or Update Record.
GP2GP in DHCW primary-care services GP practice record transfer comparison Transfer of GP records between GP practices. GP2GP is a separate capability from GP Connect.
NHS Wales App Patient-facing access comparison Patient-facing national digital access route in Wales. Not the NHS App, and not evidence of GP Connect patient-facing APIs.

Spine-Like Routes

Wales route Closest Spine service function What it supports Boundary
Welsh Demographic Service / PDS relationship PDS / NHS Number demographics PDS is connected to WDS for patients registered with Welsh GPs. Wales has a relationship with PDS, but Welsh-service access and governance remain distinct.
National Data Resource / Care Data Repository National data platform / shared data infrastructure Welsh national data infrastructure direction for health and social care information. Strategic and programme evidence, not a single Spine clone.
NHS Wales FHIR standards and implementation route UK Core / FHIR standards route Welsh national FHIR implementation and standards function within DHCW and the National Data Resource context. Standards route, not evidence that Wales uses NHS England GP Connect.
Welsh Clinical Portal and Welsh GP Record Summary-record and clinical-viewer functions Clinical access to records and results in Welsh care settings. Welsh clinical-access evidence, not GP Connect Access Record evidence.
Welsh Clinical Communications Gateway e-RS / messaging / document exchange functions GP-hospital messaging and communications. Welsh national route, not NHS England e-RS or GP Connect messaging.
Primary Care Electronic Prescription Service / Shared Medicines Record EPS / medicines exchange functions Electronic prescribing and medicines-information access in Welsh national tools. Functional comparison only; implementation details need DHCW sources.

InterSystems Boundary

Wales has strong InterSystems evidence for all-Wales LIMS 2.0 / TrakCare Lab Enterprise, tracked on InterSystems in Wales. The current evidence does not show InterSystems involvement in Welsh GP Record, Welsh Clinical Portal, WCCG, NHS Wales App, or NDR/CDR.

Domain Split Trigger

Before creating a devolved-nations evidence-domain page, recheck the promotion trigger in Source and Evidence Domain Map. This page should remain a country connectivity module unless future work repeatedly needs to traverse all devolved connectivity pages, all InterSystems-by-nation pages, and the canonical registers for the same cross-nation question.

Follow-up Evidence

  • Add current DHCW technical detail for Welsh GP Record, WCP, WCCG, Shared Medicines Record, and PC EPS.
  • Map how LIMS 2.0 / TrakCare Lab Enterprise feeds Welsh Clinical Portal, Welsh Results Reporting Service, Care Data Repository, or National Data Resource once public implementation evidence exists.
  • Confirm whether any Welsh source explicitly adopts GP Connect terminology before changing the boundary.
